Methods and compositions relating to Alzheimer's disease are done by analyzing the proteins that are differentially expressed in the brain in the Alzheimer's disease state. These are very much different from the proteins in normal brain.

Dementia is one of the major public health problems of the geriatric population. But off late it seems to affecting even those in their thirties. Increasing numbers of patients with dementia are imposing a major financial burden on health systems around the world. More than half of the patients with dementia have Alzheimer's disease (AD). The prevalence and incidence of AD have been shown to increase exponentially. The prevalence for AD in Europe is 0.5% for ages 60-69 years, 4.2% for ages 70-79 years, and 13.8% for ages 80-89 years. The survival time after the onset of AD is approximately from 3 to 10 years. Death occurs as the brain cells are starved of the energy and nutrients.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia in older individuals, is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease for which there is no definitive cure as of now. It destroys the neurons in parts of the brain, chiefly the hippocampus, which is a region involved in coding memories. Alzheimer's disease gives rise to an irreversible progressive loss of cognitive functions and of functional autonomy. The earliest signs of AD may be mistaken for simple forgetfulness, but in those who are eventually diagnosed with the disease, these initial signs inexorably progress to more severe symptoms of mental deterioration. While the time it takes for AD to develop will vary from person to person, advanced signs include severe memory impairment, confusion, language disturbances, personality and behavior changes, and impaired judgement. Persons with AD may become non-communicative and hostile. As the disease ends its course in profound dementia, patients are unable to care for themselves and often require institutionalization or professional care in the home setting. While some patients may live for years after being diagnosed with AD, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is eight years.

In the past, AD could only be definitively diagnosed by brain biopsy or upon autopsy after a patient died. These methods, which demonstrate the presence of the characteristic plaque and tangle lesions in the brain, are still considered the gold standard for the pathological diagnoses of AD. However, in the clinical setting brain biopsy is rarely performed and diagnosis depends on a battery of neurological, psychometric and biochemical tests, including the measurement of biochemical markers such as the ApoE and tau proteins or the beta-amyloid peptide in cerebrospinal fluid and blood.

Biomarkers may possibly possess the key in the next step for diagnosing AD and other dementia. A biological marker that fulfils the requirements for the diagnostic test for AD would have several advantages. An ideal biological marker would be one that identifies AD cases at a very early stage of the disease, before there is degeneration observed in the brain imaging and neuropathological tests. A biomarker could be the first indicator for starting treatment as early as possible, and also very valuable in screening the effectiveness of new therapies, particularly those that are focused on preventing the development of neuropathological changes. A biological marker would also be useful in the follow-up of the development of the disease.

Bacopa monniera (common names: water hyssop and Brahmi) is a creeping perennial that thrives in warmer temperate climates. The genus Bacopa includes over 100 species of aquatic herbs distributed throughout the warmer regions of the world. The plant is a profusely branched herb, rooting at the nodes and forming dense mats. Bacopa. monniera extract (Bacopin.RTM.) is a standardized extract prepared from the leaves of the B. monniera plant (Sabinsa Corporation, Piscataway, N.J., USA). It is standardized for a minimum of 20% bacosides A & B, the active ingredients beneficial in the support of cognitive functions. Other extracts of the B. monniera plant standardized for a greater minimum levels of bacosides A & B (e.g., 30%, 40%, 50%, etc.) are useful in the compositions of the present invention and can be prepared by extraction techniques known in the art. The pharmacological effects of B. monniera preparations/extracts also include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic and anticancer effects. In one embodiment, the herb-containing composition of the invention contains a B. monniera extract standardized for a at least about 20% bacosides A & B. My grandpa has cataracts and needs surgery to remove them. However he also has Alzheimer's and I am worried about the effect anesthesia has with his disease..
The anesthesia shouldn't affect the Alzheimers itself.. . But anesthesia can cause short-term confusion, as can hospitalization. So that can make his Alzheimers seem worse.. . Plus, if his dementia is severe, he won't be able to participate in his own after-care, and may need to be watched closely or even restrained to keep him from damaging his eyes before they're healed.

New hope and breakthrough in Alzheimer's treatment. In a paper published today a team of researchers Gary Landreth and Paige
Cramer of Case Western University found that a drug called Bexarotene has a remarkable effect on mice afflicted with a
condition similar to Alzheimer’s in humans. These mice have similar plaques in their brains, compose of beta-amyloid proteins, and they show behavioral and cognitive impairment similar to the problems experienced by Alzheimer’s patients.

Within just hours of administering bexarotene to these mice, the plaques started to clear. If that weren’t amazing enough, within a few days the mice also recovered cognitive abilities that they had lost. In particular, they regained the ability to make nests, a behavior that normal mice have and that the Alzheimer’s mice had lost. They also regained at least some of their sense of smell. Bexarotene known commonly as Targretin is a drug that came into market in 1999 and was originally meant for treating certain types of Skin cancer. It is also used off label for lung cancer and breast cancer. If you are a care giver just makes sure your doctor knows about Bexarotene.

Is it possible that one of the greatest geniuses, inventors and innovators the world has seen - Steve Jobs could have been alive today if only he had been bit more smart when it came to his health? There are currently talks that Steve Jobs relied more on natural and herbal medicines to treat his cancer rather than surgery. Question arises whether it is really true.

Firstly we have to understand the type of cancer Steve Jobs was suffering from. He was suffering from a rare form of pancreatic cancer known as islet-cell neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer. To aggravate this mortality rate further Steve jobs was suffering from a rare form of pancreatic cancer which has even higher mortality rates.

Steve Jobs' pancreatic cancer was diagnosed in 2003 and he died in 2011. . There only a 3% chance for him to survive beyond 2008. Going by the statistics he definitely lived much longer and gave the world few more great products. Steve Jobs took a number of herbal medicines along with conventional treatment. The news that Steve Jobs relied upon herbal medicines and hence he did not take conventional medical treatment or undergo surgery is totally wrong. Amino acid content in sperm is one important factor that determines the survival of spermatozoa in the female genital tract.  The failure of sperm progression in the female genital tract may be due to a decrease of amino acid molecules in semen of infertile patients.  It was also shown in various studies around the world that consumption large amount of amino acid supplements alone did not increase the concentration of amino acid molecules I semen.

Shilajit was found in 2 distinct studies to effectively increase the concentration of amino acids in semen.  The seminal fluids of 2 sets of individuals were studied.  One set was of average age of 60 years and mostly infertile.  The other set was of average age of 30 years.
