The process of cancer can be compared to that of an assembly line. There is chain of events that take place before the disease is formed in the body. The presence of carcinogens, the process of initiation, the DNA damage to the cells, benign stage, pre malignant stage, malignant stage, clinically defined cancer stage, progression and metastasis are the chain of actions that take place. While the cells are damaged due to carcinogens, many types of cancer cells can be made to progress back to a less malignant form the disease by exposure to various nutrients. Some of the phytonutrients found in vegetables and fruits have been shown to make the cancer more malignant. In the malignant form the disease may not due much harm in the lifetime of the patient. Most important of all, it has been demonstrated repeatedly in both ani¬mal and human studies that dietary changes can actually reverse premalignant changes in body cells.. Cells that have begun to turn cancerous can return to functionality with the help of certain nutrients. To a certain extent, most carcinogens require metabolic triggers of some kind if they are to prog¬ress on toward cancer. Blocking agents in our food can prevent them from becoming active in a cancerous way.Several kinds of vegetables are particularly rich in these cancer suppressing agents. Vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, turnips, emblica and mustard greens are outstanding examples. Garlic and onions which are rich in sulfur-containing blocking agents are very effective. Citrus fruit oils contain yet an¬other variety of blocking agent. All of the above agents increase the activity of detoxifying enzymes that are employed by the body to break down active car¬cinogens before they can damage the DNA of cells. |
