Singulair drug is used to treat asthma and allergy symptoms. It is also used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis like sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, itching of the nose and to prevent exercise-induced asthma.  Singulair is a pill approved by the FDA for treatment of asthma and allergy symptoms.  It is part of a class of medications known as leukotriene agents the other similar medications in this class include Accolate (manufactured by AstraZeneca) and Zyflo (manufactured by Critical Therapeutics).   Singulair (montelukast sodium) is  Merck’s top-selling product, had worldwide sales of $5 Billion Dollars in 2006. 

 Singulair was approved in 1998 to prevent asthma in people one year and older, and in 2003, its approval was expanded to include the treatment of seasonal allergies in adults and children 2 years and older.  It is a very, very popular medication.  Singulair is a once-a-day medicine classified as as leukotriene receptor antagonists used to treat asthma and symptoms of allergic rhinitis.  It is indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and pediatric patients 12 months of age and older.

Singulair is taken to prevent and treat asthma.  It is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used, either alone or in conjunction with inhaled corticosteroids, to reduce the frequency of acute asthma attacks.  It works by blocking leukotrienes, powerful substances that are involved in the inflammatory process associated with asthma.  Singulair has been studied for the long-term control of asthma, but is not intended for the relief of acute asthma episodes or symptoms.  It is used for preventing and long-term treatment of asthma.  Singulair (Montelukast) is also used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis, which is characterized by sneezing, runny, itchy and stuffy nose.  Singulair is currently approved in the US for use by adults and children 12 months and over for the relief of symptoms brought on by indoor and outdoor allergies. 

Montelukast  is slo indicated for prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in patients aged 15 years and older.  Singulair is used in conjunction with other asthma medications to reduce the number of acute asthma attacks when taken regularly.  .  Singulair is the first asthma controller therapy in more than 15 years indicated for children as young as two.  Singulair 4 mg comes in a convenient cherry-flavored chewable tablet.  It  was approved in February 1998 as a 5 mg cherry-flavored chewable tablet for children ages 6 to 14 and as a 10 mg tablet for adolescents and adults 15 and older for the prevention and chronic treatment of asthma.  This medicine should be taken once daily in the evening. It is very important that you continue to take your other asthma medicines unless your doctor tells you to stop.  Phenylketonuric patients should be aware that the chewable tablet for Singulair contains phenylalanine (a part of aspartame).
