Posh spice Cheap, accessible curcumin appears to have cancer-fighting properties. Government should support research on this and other unpatented substances. FOR roughly 6,000 years, when a little girl or boy in India scraped a knee, a relative likely dusted the wound with turmeric. Familiar to Westerners as the spice that gives curry its glow, turmeric is thought by Indians to be a medicine as well as food. The Indians are right. Last week, researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center here announced that curcumin, the powdered root found in both turmeric and curry powder, seems to have exceptional cancer-fighting powers. Can eating more spices like turmeric really lower my cancer risk?A. There is laboratory evidence to suggest that curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its yellow color, might reduce formation or growth of cancer cells. However, we have very little evidence of its effects in humans. Small studies suggest that it may protect against cancers of the breast, colon and more. But in some cases, benefits are only seen from amounts of curcumin that far exceed what is normally consumed in diet. |

Turmeric may help lower risk of breast cancer after exposure to hormone replacement therapy, U.S. researchers say. The study, published in the journal Menopause, found curcumin — a component of the spice turmeric — delayed the first appearance, decreased incidence and reduced multiplicity of progestin-accelerated tumors in an animal model. Progestin is a synthetic progestagen that has effects similar to the hormone progesterone. Turmeric, a spice that is a key ingredient in Indian curry dishes, contains a potent cancer-fighting agent, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. A study published in the upcoming issue of Cancer magazine related that curcumin, a chemical pigment in turmeric, helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumor cells to the lungs of mice. Now doctors have launched clinical tests to see if it works on humans, |

India has one of the lowest incidence of cancer (particularly of breast cancer). This is despite high rates of tobacco and arecanut consumption in India. Moreover Alzheimer’s disease is considered very rare in India. This is called as the Indian Paradox similar to the popular term French Paradox. French have very low incidence of coronary heart disease despite consuming a diet very rich in saturated fats. This is mainly due to the high consumption of red wine by the french. A constituent of red wine, a poly phenol known as resveratrol is believed to cause such beneficial effect. Similarly turmeric is a part of cuisine in India almost on daily basis. A constituent circumin in the turmeric is believed to have this beneficial anti cancer property. Turmeric is the major ingredient in the Indian curry type food. Indians consume curry almost on daily basis right from the age of 4 years. Circumin if one of the component of turmeric. Circumin content is around 3.4% by weight in best quality turmerics. Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland have successfully treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin — the molecule found in turmeric. The scientists have found that circumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. They have found that the cancer cells on being treated with curcumin began to digest themselves. Turmeric can suppress tumors and those who eat lot of curry type food are less prone to tumors. There are hundreds of studies and researches by various universities and laboratories that do seem to confirm the anti cancer properties of turmeric. So next time you come across an Indian restaurant be sure to book your table. |
