  • National Cancer Institute (US National Institute Of Health) define “curcumin as a yellow pigment of the spice turmeric that is being studied in cancer prevention”

  • Medline Plus of US National Library Of Medicine mentions the uses of Turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.)/ curcumin , based on scientific evidence. It mentions “Several early animal and laboratory studies report anti-cancer (colon, skin, breast) properties of curcumin. Many mechanisms have been considered, including antioxidant activity, anti-angiogenesis (prevention of new blood vessel growth), and direct effects on cancer cells”  Turmeric has also been found to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers“

  • British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)  has extensively reported on the beneficial uses of turmeric especially in preventing alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric a spicy ingredient of many curries may be an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. The finding may help to explain why rates of Alzheimer’s are much lower among the elderly in India than in their Western peers.

  • Reuters the world leading news broadcasting organization reports that  ” Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin — a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow color — and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours” Study showed curcumin caused the cancer cells to die “using an unexpected system of cell messages.”

  • Drugs.com mission is the Internet’s most trusted resource for drug and related health information. According to it “curcumin and its analogs have been reported to inhibit cancer at multiple stages of development, including initiation, promotion, and metastasis. Curcumin is thought to act through a variety of mechanisms including the ability to induce apoptosis, inhibit angiogenesis, and modulate tumor suppresser genes. Studies have also indicated that curcumin has a radio sensitizing effect on cancer cell cultures”

Posh spice Cheap, accessible curcumin appears to have cancer-fighting properties. Government should support research on this and other unpatented substances.

FOR roughly 6,000 years, when a little girl or boy in India scraped a knee, a relative likely dusted the wound with turmeric. Familiar to Westerners as the spice that gives curry its glow, turmeric is thought by Indians to be a medicine as well as food. The Indians are right. Last week, researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center here announced that curcumin, the powdered root found in both turmeric and curry powder, seems to have exceptional cancer-fighting powers.

Can eating more spices like turmeric really lower my cancer risk?A. There is laboratory evidence to suggest that curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its yellow color, might reduce formation or growth of cancer cells. However, we have very little evidence of its effects in humans. Small studies suggest that it may protect against cancers of the breast, colon and more. But in some cases, benefits are only seen from amounts of curcumin that far exceed what is normally consumed in diet.

Turmeric may help lower risk of breast cancer after exposure to hormone replacement therapy, U.S. researchers say. The study, published in the journal Menopause, found curcumin — a component of the spice turmeric — delayed the first appearance, decreased incidence and reduced multiplicity of progestin-accelerated tumors in an animal model. Progestin is a synthetic progestagen that has effects similar to the hormone progesterone.

Turmeric, a spice that is a key ingredient in Indian curry dishes, contains a potent cancer-fighting agent, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. A study published in the upcoming issue of Cancer magazine related that curcumin, a chemical pigment in turmeric, helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumor cells to the lungs of mice. Now doctors have launched clinical tests to see if it works on humans,

India has one of the lowest incidence of canceR. Why?

anti-aging-supplements India has one of the lowest incidence of canceR. Why? http://www.rudramani.com

India has one of the lowest incidence of cancer (particularly of breast cancer). This is despite high rates of tobacco and arecanut consumption in India. Moreover Alzheimer’s disease is considered very rare in India. This is called as the Indian Paradox similar to the popular term French Paradox. French have very low incidence of coronary heart disease despite consuming a diet very rich in saturated fats. This is mainly due to the high consumption of red wine by the french. A constituent of red wine, a poly phenol known as resveratrol is believed to cause such beneficial effect. Similarly turmeric is a part of cuisine in India almost on daily basis. A constituent circumin in the turmeric is believed to have this beneficial anti cancer property.

Turmeric is the major ingredient in the Indian curry type food. Indians consume curry almost on daily basis right from the age of 4 years. Circumin if one of the component of turmeric. Circumin content is around 3.4% by weight in best quality turmerics.

Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland have successfully treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin — the molecule found in turmeric. The scientists have found that circumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. They have found that the cancer cells on being treated with curcumin began to digest themselves. Turmeric can suppress tumors and those who eat lot of curry type food are less prone to tumors.

There are hundreds of studies and researches by various universities and laboratories that do seem to confirm the anti cancer properties of turmeric. So next time you come across an Indian restaurant be sure to book your table.

    # According to ‘How Stuff Works “one of turmeric’s most exciting benefits is its potential ability to prevent cancer and even slow down the spread of cancer that has already developed. People who regularly include the spice in their diet have much lower occurrences of cancer” http://health.howstuffworks.com
    # As per About.com “Researchers continue to examine the effects how curcumin can regulate the activation of immune system to help fight against cancer. In fact, over the last several years, several research papers have been published on its medicinal properties, many of which have focused on cancer care. An in-vitro cancer research study reported at the 2007 meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research concluded that curcumin-based therapies may be attractive in patients with ovarian carcinoma. An in-vitro study is one in which test tubes are used to conduct studies. Specific cells are targeted, like cancer cells, and studied to see how a drug or nutrient affects the cells. Two additional in-vitro studies suggest drug resistance in ovarian cancer cells was reduced when chemo and curcumin were given together”. http://ovariancancer.about.com
